Lake Ogascanan Lodge

Testing the limits of an angler’s will and endurance, Lake Trout are the deep-water heavyweights of Ogascanan. As a cold-water species, their location is dictated entirely by water temperatures. After ice out, giants can be hooked right along shore – they’ll smash spoons in freezing shallows. As the water warms, they retreat to the vast, open-water basins seeking their sub-50 degree comfort zone. Because they spend their lives in the extreme cold, their metabolism is incredibly slow and so is their growth. Fortunately for anglers, that slow pace packs their bodies with dense muscle and makes them unbelievably strong fighters. Hooking a Laker isn’t a splashy surface brawl; it is a stubborn, arm burning tug-of-war against a fish that knows exactly how to use deep water to its advantage. If you’re lucky enough to bring a true trophy to the net – you’re holding decades of Ogascanan history.

Lake Trout fishing places an emphasis on quality versus quantity; a “big game hunting” mindset is required to be successful. They can be targeted in the early spring with spinning gear, casting shorelines or mid-lake humps with shiny spoons. Summer fishing requires downrigging, lead core or steel line setups, or anything else that will get you deep. For those that prefer a more subtle approach, vertical jigging works as well. You won’t catch Lakers in the same numbers as other fish, but when you feel the heavy head shakes of a deep-water giant, you’ll know the hunt was worth it.

Ogascanan is home to a naturally reproducing population of native Lake Trout. Unlike the white, oily meat of stocked fish found in other waters, our native Lakers yield pinkish fillets – similar to salmon. They spend their lives swimming in 50 degree water, dramatically slowing their growth rate compared to other fish. A massive, heavy-bodied Laker can easily be twenty, thirty, or even forty years old. We strongly encourage guests to keep the smaller, younger Lakers for eating, and to safely release the larger breeding fish. Lake Trout carry an undeniable presence felt by those that catch them. They have a way of looking prehistoric. It takes a lifetime for the lake to grow a true trophy, and releasing fish like the one above preserves the ancient bloodline.

Rigged and Ready: What To Bring

Rod and Reel: those accustomed to downrigging, or trolling with steel or lead core line are encouraged to bring whatever setup they’re most comfortable with. For targeting shallow fish in the spring, a strong medium action spinning or bait casting rod spooled with 20-30lb braided line will set you up for success.   Tackle: Lakers love flashy spoons! Keep the colours to metallic combinations, along with blue and pink as well. For jigging, ⅜ to ½oz lead head jigs will get you down deep, and they can be tipped with Gulp! minnows, or rigged inside white tubes.

Dont Forget: Tangle proof nets, pinching barbs from some treble hooks, and long-reach hook retrievers help immensely with ensuring a healthy live release.
