Lake Ogascanan Lodge

When it comes to fishing, nothing tops the heart stopping strike of a large Northern Pike. No subtle tap on the line or wondering “was that a fish…?” – Pike are pure aggression. The rod doubles over while your drag screams for mercy, leaving you holding on for dear life. Getting your hooks in them is only half the battle; a large Pike can cause chaos in the boat, especially when they see the net for the first time. The Pike population of Ogascanan is plentiful, and they’re far from shy. In fact, anglers often have these water wolves T-bone Walleye right at the boat, their rows of sharp teeth leaving deep gashes on their unsuspecting catch. They are the apex predators of Ogascanan, and their bad attitudes have made them a favourite among our guests!

With miles of weedy shorelines, and numerous shallow bays, Ogascanan provides the perfect habitat to produce both high numbers and trophy-sized Northern Pike – along with different ways to attack them. Early in the season, our Pike are shallow, and can be targeted with surface lures or even flies. As the water warms in the summer, the larger fish seek cooler temperatures and move into deeper water. Pike are most active from late morning through the mid-afternoon, and trophy fish often hooked by unsuspecting Walleye anglers on light tackle.

Lake Ogascanan Lodge is a favourite destination of Pike anglers. Our waters consistently churn out the numbers for action-packed afternoons, with the legitimate chance at an absolute submarine each time you cast. Most of the monsters you see were safely released by guests after snapping a quick photo. Ogascanan anglers consistently “pay it forward”, as releasing the giant breeders ensures their genetics are being passed on to create more giants. Those who enjoy eating Pike are encouraged to keep fish in the 25″ to 30″ range, as they are the best eating size.

Rigged and Ready: What To Bring

Rod and Reel: a sturdy, medium action spinning or baitcasting rod is the sweet spot. Most of the Pike you hook will be in the 24″- 32″ range. Spool some 20 – 30lb braided line on the reel of your choice and you’ll be well equipped to land whatever attacks your lure.
Tackle: All of the classic Pike favourites will catch you fish at Ogascanan. Medium sized baits work best – think 4″ to 6″ range. Spoons, Spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits like Husky Jerks or X-Raps all work well. For early season trips, throw some topwater plugs and buzzbaits in your tackle box and watch them get blown up! Bring a variety of colours, with Perch patterns being a favourite.
Dont Forget: Steel leaders are essential, and 6″ to “8” is an ideal length. Tangle proof nets, removing some barbs from treble hooks, and long-reach hook retrievers help immensely with the quick and safe release of these fierce fighters.
