Whenever you think of a fish-fry, there’s a good chance those tasty fillets came from a Walleye. They are the undisputed kings of the shore lunch, and at Lake Ogascanan Lodge, they are the heartbeat of our fishery. With its many bays, rocky shoals, and a thriving population of baitfish, Ogascanan provides the perfect habitat for a massive Walleye population. Many anglers are surprised to learn that our blue-coloured Walleye are just as common as the classic golden yellows. Cast to cast, you never know which you’ll hook into, as they share the same water and school together. With plenty of eating-size fish, and an abundance of hard-fighting trophies, your next meal or personal best is just a hookset away!

If you’re used to fishing clear lakes, you might think you need to fish the night shift to catch Walleye. Not here. The tinted waters of Ogascanan provide Walleye the cover they need to feed comfortably throughout the day, especially under cloudy skies or in a good chop. While evenings are productive, our best Walleye are caught during the day.

premier Walleye lake doesn’t stay that way by accident. Ogascanan has always been remote and isolated, but to guarantee our fishery remained bountiful in the future, we pushed to implement a legally binding slot limit in 2010. Since then, every Walleye over 21″, along with those under 14.5″, must go right back into the water. We protected the most prolific breeders, along with the babies – they get a chance to spawn at least once too! It’s not an optional “camp rule”. It’s the law, and it’s a proven formula that ensures the fishing is just as phenomenal today as it was decades ago. Ogascanan was worth protecting, and the results speak for themselves.

Rigged and Ready: What To Bring

Rod and Reel: sensitive, 6’ to 7’ medium-light or medium action spinning rod will be key to your success. Pair that with 8 to 10-pound braided line and a fluorocarbon leader, and you’ll lock in the perfect all- around setup.   When it comes to the tackle box, keep it proven and practical:   Jigs: Bring plenty of jig heads. All bright colors will produce, but chartreuse and orange most often work best.   Live Bait: Tip your jigs with live nightcrawlers or leeches for the best results. Glup! has proven effective as well. Standard worm harnesses and bottom bouncers (1 oz to 2 oz) are also absolutely deadly on our mid summer humps, and drop shot rigs are a can’t-miss favorite as well.

Other Popular Choices: Pack a handful of Jigging Raps, classic Rapalas, and Hot N Tots. Perch patterns are effective across the board, whether you are casting the shallows at first light or working deeper structure.
